Frequently asked questions
Where does sitemap.xml go?
At your site root — https://example.com/sitemap.xml. Reference it from robots.txt with a Sitemap: line so every crawler finds it, including ones you have not verified ownership with.
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
50,000, or 50 MB uncompressed. Past that you split the list across several files and list those in a sitemap index — this tool generates the index for you when your list is too long.
Do priority and changefreq do anything?
Google has said it ignores both. They are included because other engines still read them and they cost nothing, but do not expect them to influence how often you are crawled.
Should I include every URL?
Only canonical, indexable ones. Listing a URL that is noindexed, redirected or canonicalised elsewhere sends a contradictory signal and wastes crawl budget.
