How long should a meta description be?
120–160 characters. Google measures pixel width rather than characters, so treat that range as guidance — the SERP preview here is the more reliable check.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly. It affects click-through rate, which is what actually earns you traffic from a ranking you already have. Treat it as ad copy, not as a ranking lever.
Why does Google show different text than my description?
Google rewrites descriptions for roughly two thirds of results when it thinks a passage from the page answers the query better. A tight, relevant description makes that less likely.
