WCAG 2.2 Target Size Calculator (2.5.8)

Work out whether your buttons, icons and links meet WCAG 2.2 Target Size (Minimum). Enter your CSS box model, or lay out targets yourself, and see the 24 px spacing circles that decide whether an undersized target still passes — plus the 44 × 44 AAA check.

Element box

CSS px. Content + padding + border is the target.

Spacing

Gap plus both neighbours' facing margins.

Margin is not part of the target, but it is part of the spacing. Two inline buttons with margin: 0 4px sit 8 px apart. Vertical margins between blocks collapse, so count the larger one only.

Why use the Target Size Checker

Private by design

No account needed. What you type stays in your browser unless you ask for an AI suggestion or name a URL to fetch.

Exact WCAG 2.2 thresholds

Each check uses the success criterion's own numbers, such as 4.5:1, 24×24 CSS px or a 2 px perimeter, with no rounding up into a pass.

Named criteria

Verdicts cite the success criterion they test, so a result can go straight into an audit report.

Frequently asked questions

What does WCAG 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum) require?

Each pointer target must be at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels — or, if smaller, spaced so that a 24 px diameter circle centred on it does not intersect another target or another undersized target's circle. It is a level AA criterion, new in WCAG 2.2.

Does padding count towards target size?

Yes. The target is the element's clickable area, which is its border box: content, padding and border. Margin does not count — it is empty space outside the element — but it does add to the spacing between targets, which is what the spacing exception measures.

How does the spacing exception work in practice?

For identical targets in a row, it reduces to centre-to-centre distance: if the centres are at least 24 px apart, the circles do not overlap. A 16 px icon button therefore passes with an 8 px gap to its neighbours. A large neighbour is different — the small target's circle must not reach into it at all.

Which targets are exempt?

Four exceptions apply: an equivalent control elsewhere on the page meets the size; the target sits inline in a sentence or block of text; the size is set by the browser and not modified by the author; or the specific presentation is essential or legally required. Mark a target with one of these and the checker counts it as a pass.

What is the difference between 2.5.8 and 2.5.5?

2.5.5 Target Size (Enhanced) is level AAA and requires 44 by 44 CSS pixels with no spacing exception. 2.5.8 is the AA criterion most organisations are held to. Both are reported here.
