Frequently asked questions
When do I need a canonical tag?
Whenever the same content is reachable at more than one URL — tracking parameters, print views, http and https variants, or trailing-slash differences all qualify.
Should a page canonicalise to itself?
Yes. A self-referencing canonical on every page is standard practice; it removes ambiguity when someone links to your page with parameters appended.
Is a canonical tag a redirect?
No. It is a hint, and Google can ignore it. If a URL should never be visited, use a 301 redirect instead — canonical tags are for pages that must stay reachable.
